New Beta Version of HEC-RAS 5.0

Fellow HEC-RAS users:

A new beta version of HEC-RAS (August 21, 2015 build-"Release Candidate 2") is now available to download and install.  I have no new information about  when the final release will be made available, but for now this new beta version has a lot of bugs fixed and many new features, including breaklines, Manning’s n value regions, and mapping of sloped water surfaces in RAS Mapper for 2D areas.  Please follow the directions from HEC below for downloading and installing.

Enclosed is a link to a new HEC-RAS 5.0 version, Release Candidate 2, August 2015.  We have fixed several Bugs since the Release Candidate 1 version.  This version has all the features we have planned for the final release.  We are in a No New Features mode, and performing the final testing and documentation updates.

     This self extracting exe should be run in a separate directory.  Once it is run, there will be a new Setup package for the HEC-RAS 5.0 beta software; a new 2D User’s Manual in PDF format; and a new set of 2D example data sets in a zip file.  You must have admin privileges to run and install the software using the setup package.  Please Uninstall the previous HEC-RAS 5.0 beta first!!!!

     Thank you for installing and testing this final Beta version of the software.

Some of the New Stuff:

1. Lateral Structures can now be Georeferenced.  So it will be easier to lay them out, and get them connected to 1D river reaches and 2D Flow Areas.
2. HEC-RAS Mapper, now uses a TIN based sloping water surface technique to show spatial results inside of RAS Mapper. Previous versions, in 2D area the depth, velocity, etc.. was plotted as a single value for the entire cell, which produced some blocky looking plots in steep terrain.
3. More flexible internal hydraulic structures.
4. Improvements to the stability of connecting 1D reaches into and out of 2D flow areas.
5. Several New output capabilities in RAS Mapper – please see the 2D user’s manual.
6. Many Bug fixes, especially in RAS Mapper.

    Thanks for providing this updated version! I know we're all excited to see this tool evolve.

    Do you know if RAS 5.0 - RAS Mapper will eventually have the capability to extract time-series flow information? XPSWMM has this capability across a user defined line/section and i find it extremely useful for design purposes. In the last beta version, I was using time-series velocity and depth and summing individual cells to come up with flow, which was cumbersome. Curious for your thoughts on that approach, as well.

    1. Hey Matt- Yes, you can do that in HEC-RAS now. Use a 2D Area Connection inside your 2D area. Copy the 2D area cutline terrain and use that for your station-elevation data. Then make sure you use the "normal 2D equation domain" option. It will not affect your results, but you'll be able to look at time series flow using the stage and flow hydrograph viewer.

  2. Thanks Chris! Is anyone else having trouble getting the Google Tile Cache Export to work for model results in Mapper?

    In the previous Beta there was an option for exporting shapefiles. The link was dead but gave me hope that in subsequent versions exporting shapefiles would be an option for post-processing.

    2. Not sure if this is what you are looking for...But when you create a static map in mapper it does create a .vrt file (virtual raster). You can bring this .vrt file into QGIS or Arc viewing/editing.

    3. I figured out a way to get an inundation map shapefile!

      In MAPPER, Right-Click on the unsteady plan output in the "Results" to select "Add new results map layer".

      Once there you need to select the "Inundation Boundary" from Map Type on the left of the dialogue box. Pick the unsteady profile you want (ex: Maximum) and click "Add Map"

      You need to Right-Click on the new "Inundation Boundary" map layer and select "Compute/Update Stored Maps" in order to populate it, but once you do, you can Right-Click again there is an option to export to shapefile that I got to work!

  4. Hi Chris, thanks for the updates about the new beta version! I downloaded the installation files using the google drive link, and was able to install it. But it seems the user manual is password protected. Thanks in advance for your assistance, re: password.

      This should not be password protected. The User's Manual, Hydraulic Ref Manual, and the Applications Guide for 5.0 are still not out yet.

  5. Hi Chris,
    We've just used 5.0 Beta version to create a linked 1D-2D model for the first time, and had great success with it. Very impressed and keen to try it on other projects.
    Any idea when the full/final (non-Beta) version is likely to be available?

    1. Great to hear! I wish I knew for sure. What I do know is that they are working on some improvements to the solution scheme (for stability). It is likely to take a few more months at least.

  6. Dear all, I am just trying to create my first 1D-2D model and have been having problems with lateral structure. For some reason the software seems to mess up stationing of the cross sections when overlapped with the lateral structure. On the link at the end of this post I uploaded 3 screenshots. On the first one 1D stream with 2D area is visible. On the second one there is a lateral structure window on which you can see only two cross sections. The distance between those two sections should only be around 55 meters, while lateral structure spans 2547 meters. How is this possible? On the third image you can see a longitudinal profile spanning 2547 meters and I marked in red lateral structure which should be of the same length, yet it shows very short. Has anyone had simillar problem? Thanks, Best regards, Dario

    1. Sounds like you have some discrepancy between your river stationing and your lateral structure stationing, and possibly your GIS coordinates. Suggest reading carefully the manual where it discusses HW and TW stationing for your lateral structure.

Dear Chris and all others, could you apprise about applicability of HEC RAS 2D in tide dominated estuarine environment where stratified flow regimes prevail due to differential densities of fresh and seawater? And also comment on nature and sanctity of connection between 2D hydrodynamics and existing sediment transport module. Thank you!!!

    1. While HEC-RAS 2D can handle tidal boundary conditions, it is hard coded for one water density (fresh) and cannot simulate stratified flow regimes. Currently, 2D areas cannot do sediment transport. HEC is working on adding that in a later version.

    1. Depth, or more specifically water surface, profiles can be viewed dynamically by animating the water surface profile viewer. From the main RAS window, View...Water Surface Profiles. If you want to dynamically map your results, you do that in RAS Mapper. But you must establish a projection and a Terrain for it to work.

  10. I am running a combined 1D/2D model. I am using Lateral Structure (levee) to model flow going over the levee, as well as a levee breach.
    I get the following error message.

    For the Lateral weir at station
    in reach .... in river ...
    the user specified intersection for weir stationing versus river station ...... is not in numerical order.
    Please check your data.
    Error Accepting the preprocessor files.

    Any ideas what might be the problem?
